In this test you will be asked to tell or show the examiner you have a competent understanding of basic car safety checks to ensure that the vehicle you are driving is safe for road use.
Test Candidates will be asked two questions before the practical test: one question will be based on a “show me” question and the other question will be based on a “tell me” question. One wrong answer will result in your receiving one minor fault on the Practical test.
Open the bonnet and identify
Where you would check the engine oil and tell me if the engine has sufficient oil?
Where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me if the engine has the correct level?
Where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how to check the fluid level?
Where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check there is as safe level of brake fluid?
Tell me how you would check that the
Headlights & tail lights are working. (No need to exit vehicle)
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is at fault.
Head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Brake lights are working.
Brakes are working before starting your journey.
Tyres have sufficient tread and are in good condition.

Demister controls are working so that you can clear all the windows effectively. This should include both front and rear screens

Indicators are working.
Horn is working.
Parking brake for excessive wear.
